Sophie Hall (played by Amanda Seyfried) is an investigator for The New Yorker. Her fiancé Victor is busy with his restaurant. They travel to Verona, Italy. However, Victor is so engrossed in tasting the local cuisine that he neglects her. This leads to conflicts in their relationship. Sophie wanders to the wall of wishes and discovers that many people have been writing letters to Juliet. She is curious and follows a woman collecting the letters, finding out that four women play Juliet and respond to emotional inquiries. Touched, Sophie decides to join their ranks. She reads a letter from 50 years ago: Claire Smith (played by Vanessa Redgrave) shares a story of a love that left her with regrets. Sophie thoughtfully replies to the letter. Unexpectedly, one day, the elderly woman's grandson Charlie (played by Chris Egan) comes to her door. She learns that the elderly woman read her letter and has decided to reclaim her true love. But Charlie finds this absurd. In their argument, the three of them embark on a journey to find love together.
