On July 2nd of a future year, surveillance stations across the United States detected a massive spaceship approaching Earth, measuring hundreds of miles in diameter. The radio signals emitted by the ship interfered with Earth's communication satellites and released several sub-ships, each 15 miles in diameter, to hover over major cities on Earth. The intentions of the alien ship were unclear, leading people into panic and confusion. Computer engineer David (played by Jeff Goldblum) deciphered the radio signals from the aliens, realizing they were actually a countdown to an attack. He managed to notify his ex-wife, Connie, the president's assistant, but it was too late. On July 3rd, the aliens' ships began to attack Earth, and human civilization was hit hard and faced disaster in an instant. The president (played by Bill Pullman) and others evacuated to a military base to command a counterattack with the air force, but it was like striking a rock with an egg, completely ineffective. The military base was destroyed, and only pilot Steven (played by Will Smith) managed to lure an alien battle cruiser to crash. The survivors escaped to a secret military base, where scientists had been studying an alien spacecraft that had crashed over 50 years ago, working to find a way to combat the aliens.
